Faith in our Christian walk is a necessity. Faith in God helps us move through seasons in life, whether they be good or bad. Faith gives us hope when all else seems lost. Faith pulls us through the valleys and leads us to the mountain top.
I believe that faith, very similar to love in a relationship (friendship or otherwise), is all about choice. Love is not simply a feeling or emotion or butterflies in the stomach - but it is an active choice to put another persons needs, wants and desires before our own. Just like love, faith is walking, speaking and actively choosing to believe that no matter the what the circumstance, situation or crossroads we find ourselves, that God is bigger, stronger and higher than what we are feeling or experiencing in that moment.
But what happens when faith is all you have?
What happens when every thing you believe about God and this life is shaken to it's very core?
I have recently had an experience that has shaken my very foundation and has caused me to ask myself, do I actually believe what I'm singing about on a Sunday when I lead worship? Do I fully believe that God is who He says He is even though evidence of it is all around me? Is He really merciful? He is merciful. The Lord is merciful and gracious and abounding in mercy. (Psalm 103:8 NKJV paraphrased) Is He really gracious? He is gracious. The Lord is righteous in all His ways, gracious in all His works. (Psalm 145:17 NKJV). Is He really loving? He is loving. God is love. (1 John 4:8 paraphrased).
And at the end of the day, with all these questions swirling in my head and my heart, I can only come to one conclusion…
I CHOOSE to believe that God is who He says He is.
I CHOOSE to worship in spite of my emotions or feelings.
I CHOOSE to still get on my knees before God and weep my heart out when I don't understand.
I CHOOSE to believe that God is faithful no matter the circumstance.
So, when everything is falling to pieces, or even if it's not - let this be a reminder to you - the choice is yours and sometimes you just need to TELL yourself what you believe, until your spirit catches up. Faith is the obedient action that shouts, Greater is He that is in me "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world - OUR FAITH" (1 John 5:4).
